My name is Dr. Barry Beaven and I wrote this book about being a medic in the Blackhorse Regiment, I was raised in a conservative Christian family that believed in a peaceful, godly life. I was drafted in the Vietnam war and became a combat medic but didn’t carry a weapon, much like Desmond Doss of World War II. I served with the highly respected 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment and received 2 Bronze Stars for Valor as well as a Purple Heart. After the war I finished college, studied medicine, and became a solo family physician. Later I became a Medical Director in several state prisons until I retired.
The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment ("Blackhorse Regiment") is a unit of the United States Army garrisoned at Fort Irwin, California. Although termed an armored cavalry regiment, it has been re-organized as a multi-component heavy brigade combat team. The regiment has served in the Philippine–American War, World War II, the Vietnam War, Cold War, Operation Desert Storm (scout platoons), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq War). The 11th ACR serves as the Opposing Force (OPFOR) for the Army and Marine task forces, and foreign military forces that train at the National Training Center.
In my first big combat only the shrapnel hit me. In my next big fight, I took fire, but my subsequent wound didn’t destroy me. Months later I was moved from my vehicle five minutes before my other troopers hit a mine. At the next big fight I was moved again. Both medics in what was supposed to be my place got dusted off and I was kept safe. Being a combat medic taught me that I wanted to be a doctor after I finished college and during that time I was also taught was that God had been with me every day and in the worst days that came to me. When I wrote this book I wanted to tell others what the nature of combat can do to you. And I would like everyone to know that God is in their hearts every day during the worst struggles of their lives.
